At this time of year, once the hustle and bustle of food, festivities and family are behind us, our thoughts turn to kicking back and enjoying a well-earned break.
We yearn for life to slow down a little, to restore some semblance of sanity and allow our bodies and minds to rejuvenate.
Many of us turn to thoughts of the surf, sun and sand of our magnificent Queensland beaches, but at this time of year the dream can be better than the reality, as much of Australia moves to the coast. We forget about temperatures in the 30s to 40s, crowded cafés and restaurants, burning sand, difficult parking and long lines at theme parks. There is another option!
Head to the hills
1 ½ hr drive from Brisbane, set in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the cool lush and tropical retreat of the Maleny area and nearby town Montville has a calming, relaxed vibe. Its relatively high elevation with mountains and valleys has created a cooler drier climate than on the coast.
Throughout the month of December daytime temperatures traditionally reach highs of around 26°C and at night the average minimum temperature drops down to around 18°C. You can expect some rain or drizzle on about 7 days of the month. January is slightly hotter, with a higher level of precipitation.
However warm during the day you can enjoy the pleasure of cooler summer evenings, perhaps lazing on a wide verandah as you soak up the ever-changing vistas across the valleys and mountains of the Range.
Imagine swapping the crowded surf and hot sand of the beach for a creek, waterfalls and swimming hole in the beautiful location of Maleny’s Gardener’s Falls. It’s a lovely spot to visit – easy to get to from a handy carpark (no hiking through kilometres of bushland) and the water is generally cool and clear, with levels varying from reasonably shallow at the downstream so the kids can play around, to deeper where it is closer to the waterfall. Well worth a visit!
Whether your interest is in nature, art and craft, food and wine, zoos, museums, music or visiting one or more of the 7 Sunshine Coast Hinterland markets, there is something to please. For up to date details visit www.weekendnotes.com/sunshine-coast/maleny/ and enjoy!!
